Traitor's Flame

The beginning

I finished writing this novel when I was fourteen, after I had been writing it for a few years. I self-published it using the website Lulu Books, and it entered the public in October of 2023.

Story Summary

A 16-year-old girl realizes her past wasn't all she thought when she wakes up on another planet one day. She and a new unlikely group of friends must work alongside each other to find labeled criminal 'Iris' so that Piper and her best friend can go home. However, along the way, the group uncovers secrets upon secrets hidden in the fiery flames of their trust.

Themes

This early-teen level book explores themes of trust and secrets, utilizing unique fantasy elements in a world never before heard of.

    Excerpts

    Prologue:

She grabbed the knife quickly, plunging it between her father’s facial temples, watching as thick, red blood began to pour out of the edges.

Only then she came to notice Piper was standing nearby, watching in horror, eyes wide and filled with tears.

    “Iris?”

    Pages 24-25:

She spoke slowly, unsure of the words that were next to come from her mouth. “You are not from Earth, if I may put it simply. I have taken you to your home planet. Krix,”

Piper froze. She turned around to open the curtains for the small window.

Outside, the air and sky all had a dark purple hue to them. It was cold, and slightly snowy, and the buildings were all built of rusty old, dark wood and looked close to crumbling.

They were built along a pathway that led down to a small dock, with a range of differently sized rowboats strapped to a pole.

Piper began to breathe heavily. She stood and tried to run to the door.

“I’ve gotta get out of here,” she muttered to herself.

    “No- Piper!” Norah exclaimed.

She went to open the door but it was locked. She turned towards Norah and began to back up anxiously.

“Piper! It’s okay!” her voice got quieter. “I promise I won’t hurt you,” Norah held out her hand. “I’m here to help. Please just let me explain more,”

Piper turned her head. There was no way to leave, no exit from the roof, and the window was far too small to use as an escape route.

She brought her shaking hand up to Norah’s, and Norah gently grabbed it and assisted her back to her seat on the bed.

“You don’t remember your past, but I’ve been there. It was here. And you- you had a sister,”

    Pages 183-184:

A slow chuckle played from his tongue like the solo from a slow ode, and the hint of a smile tugged on his face.

“I paid for a reading,” he said. “One of those spooky ones, to tell you which god is speaking to you. You know what I got?” he paused. “Temperance. Temperance spoke to me and she said… she spoke words of patience and purpose…”

Iris felt her hands shake as her father took a step towards her.

“And you know,” he said, coming closer. “I always had a feeling she was talking to me, up in the sky,”

    Iris took a step back.

“-and she told me that all good things die,” he laughed. “I knew what I had to do, but…” he paused, for a long moment, a long moment of silence that lingered throughout the house. “No witnesses, am I right?”

It was then when he leapt at her, and she dodged, running into the kitchen and pulling open a drawer.

“Iris!” he yelled, running after her. “You think you can outrun me?”

“No,” she said, bending down as he leaned over her.

“Tell your mother I said hello,”
